Five people were shot leaving a funeral at Fort Lincoln Cemetery on Friday afternoon in an incident reported in Bladensburg, according to Police Chief Tyrone Collington, Sr.
Shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 14, officers from the Bladensburg Police Department were called to the 4300 block of Bladensburg Road when a vehicle opened fire on another in the area, sending five people to the hospital with various undisclosed injuries.
Collington could not confirm the condition of the five victims during a press briefing later on Friday afternoon, though he said that the investigation was fluid while condemning the most recent act of violence in the region.
"This is uncommon in this community," he said. "We have an obligation to protect residents at all costs, and this was an unnecessary, senseless act of violence that involved the discharge of firearms in our community."
As of 3:30 p.m. on Friday morning, the chief said that all five of the shooting victims were still alive, though their conditions were not clear.
No arrests have been made, and investigators are looking only for a "dark colored" vehicle," with an unknown make or model. It is also unclear if it was one or multiple shooters that sent the five to the hospital.
Covington also spoke about the troubling trend of gun violence not just in the DMV region, but across the country.
"I don't know about the trend, or if this incident is connected to any other, but gun violence is becoming a problem in all communities across this country," he said. "Bladensburg ... DC ... (I don't know). Our officers are actively patrolling to get these shooters off the street.
"There is a plethora of guns on our streets and they need to be taken off."
